The Social Studies Department is inviting American history teachers in the 5th, 8th and 11th grades to be involved in a grant funded by the US Department of Education. The grant is entitled Teaching American History and is designed to enable educators to teach traditional American history in a more exciting and engaging manner. It begins in the Fall of 2008.
During TAHG field trips teachers will be able to experience history through primary sources or through re-creations of historical events. Teachers will turn these experiences into lesson plans for their students; the plans will be juried and then posted on Riverdeep, to be shared with others. Examples of the field trips that participants will take include local Civil War re-enactments, trips to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Ft. McHenry, Annapolis, Ft. Mose’, St. Augustine, Amelia Island, American Beach, Ft. Caroline, Gettysburg, Antietam, Harpers Ferry, Jamestown, Williamsburg, Ft. Clinch, and other trips and workshops. This is what is meant by “bringing history alive”!
Some of the benefits of participating in the grant are:
- Earn a stipend of up to $1536 after completing 4 lesson plans based on field trips taken
- Earn 9 credit hours toward your Masters Degree
- Receive up to $1000 to purchase any history books of your choice
- Attend extremely interesting field trips during the year and a 5 to 6 day historical trip during the summer
- Receive “History Alive!" materials/kits
